Use a consequential product convergence as the proving ground for a new system—modernizing the experience without waiting for a perfect replatform.
One product, two foundations
I began leading UX for M365 Compliance Center in June 2020. The suite later evolved into the Microsoft Purview brand, combining its compliance solutions with selected data-governance offerings brought over through convergence with Azure Purview. The work joined different histories, architectures, and interaction models while I simultaneously led the design-system effort that would grow beyond Purview.
The immediate task was to create one coherent product. The larger opportunity was to reset an experience foundation that had become dated and inconsistent.
Modernize without waiting for a perfect replatform
Fluent 2 was emerging as we began the work, but a wholesale move to its new React implementation would have introduced breaking changes, coverage gaps, and substantial delivery risk. We chose a pragmatic bridge: create a Fluent 2-based theme for the existing React foundation while selectively using newer components where they were ready.
That decision let teams raise the quality bar immediately without making visual progress dependent on a complete technical migration.
Make the product the proof
Over the next 18 months, the work established a shared design language, components, and page patterns across Purview. It became the first product in the Microsoft Security suite to adopt a Fluent 2 experience direction. The converged navigation and product established a clearer, more cohesive foundation for the expanding suite.
Purview proved that a common system could improve a complex product while respecting its technical constraints. That proof became the foundation for the Security Fluent Extension and a broader investment across Defender, Purview, Intune, and Entra.
From product proof to portfolio investment
Purview showed that experience modernization could move with—not wait for— platform migration. That proof secured investment in the Security Fluent Extension and gave the broader Security portfolio a tested foundation.
